Method

What the Census AI question measures

The Business Trends and Outlook Survey asks a sample of US nonfarm employer businesses every two weeks; businesses without employees are outside it. Since its November 2025 revision the core question covers AI used in any business function, not only in producing goods or services, so this series starts at the revision and is not joined to the earlier question.

The published dashboard files carry point estimates without confidence intervals, so a change of a few tenths between releases should not be read as a trend on its own. Expected use is a statement about the next six months and includes businesses already using AI; it is not added to current use.
