How the counters work

A year-flow counter spreads an annual figure across 31,557,600 seconds, the length of a 365.25-day year, and starts at midnight UTC on 1 January. The pace is an average: real activity clusters in daylight hours and working days.
The world population counter walks the straight line between the UN estimate for 2024 and the projection for its peak in the mid-2080s. Both figures are records in the database.
A projection ticks like an actual. Each counter says which it is, who published it, and for which period; a counter built on last year's figure runs at last year's pace until the current year is published.
